EDUCATING EMPLOYERS TO PROTECT EMPLOYEES

The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) reported today that an audit of 197 businesses in Western Sydney found a significant proportion to be non-compliant with workplace laws. 

Inspectors conducted site visits with a particular focus on the suburbs of Harris Park and Parramatta in response to reports of possible non-compliance amongst local restaurants and cafes. 

“I am deeply concerned at any reports of workers not receiving their full entitlements,” Craig Laundy MP said 

“There can be no excuses for any underpayment or exploitation of workers.” 

“It is incumbent on all businesses to ensure that they are doing the right thing by their workers.” 

“This was the reason why the government designed and implemented the ‘Protecting Vulnerable Workers Act’ last year.” 

It’s also why the government has provided an additional $20.1 million to boost the resources and capabilities of the FWO to help carry out their vital role in lifting the level of compliance with workplace laws. 

Penalties for noncompliance were also increased by up to 1000 percent. 

“I will now be working with the FWO to convene education sessions in Western Sydney to ensure all businesses fully understand their obligations and know where to go to access the right information and assistance.” 

“I will also write to the local federal MP’s to enlist their support for the information sessions in their electorate.” 

“I call on all businesses to do the right thing by their workers.”
