CELEBRATING DEFENCE’S COMMITMENT TO THE WOMEN, PEACE AND SECURITY AGENDA
THE HON CHRISTOPHER PYNE MP
Minister for Defence, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, today launched the Local Action, Global Impact – Defence Implementation of Women, Peace and Security 2012-2018 Report in recognition of Defence’s achievements in supporting the Australian Government’s broader Women, Peace and Security agenda.

The Report captures Defence’s progress towards implementing the responsibilities outlined in Australia’s first National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security.

“Understanding the impact of our operations on the population, and the impact of the population on our operations, is a capability which can enhance our mission success in any given context,” Minister Pyne said.

“Implementing the Women, Peace and Security agenda in Defence is central to Australia’s operational effectiveness and mission success through its contribution to enduring peace and stability in conflict-affected and fragile societies.”

“The inclusion of women and girls as part of peace-building and conflict prevention efforts, strengthens societies and increases the likelihood of enduring peace,” he said.

“Defence was given whole or part responsibility for 17 out of the 24 actions outlined in the current National Action Plan.

“Defence has made significant progress with the implementation of Women, Peace and Security in a military context and is considered one of the leaders in our region.

Through recent operational experiences in the Middle East, in disaster response operations and exercises such as Talisman Sabre, we have seen the importance of integrating gender perspectives into our operations.”

Defence is working with the Office for Women and other departments and agencies to develop the next Australian National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security.

“This presents an ideal opportunity for Defence to reflect on the substantial progress already made and identify new implementation priorities that reflect Australia’s defence strategy,” Minister Pyne said.
