MORRISON GOVERNMENT SLAMMED BY ANOTHER ONE OF ITS HANDPICKED AGED CARE EXPERTS

Another expert handpicked by the Liberals to examine growing issues in Australia’s broken aged care system has slammed the Government’s response to their work.

Professor John Pollaers, who chaired the Government’s Workforce Strategy Taskforce, yesterday gave evidence at the Royal Commission into aged care that the Government had failed to even respond to his requests for assistance.

"I got an email response that was all of the past programs of government and I went back and said 'look, that isn't sufficient, I'm asking for a step-by-step response.' I didn't get a response to that email."

The Liberal Government is yet to fully implement even one of the 14 measures that Professor Pollaers recommended to ensure Australia’s aged care workforce was fit for purpose.

Australia is far from having the workforce that is required to care for our ageing population. We already know there aren’t enough aged care workers and they aren’t paid enough.

The Morrison Government’s treatment of Professor Pollaers and his work underscores just how little they care about establishing the workforce required to ensure older Australians get the care they deserve.

Professor Pollaers’ criticism yesterday followed evidence given at the Royal Commission in August from Professor Ron Paterson who also criticised the Government’s response to his report.

Professor Paterson was picked by the Liberal Government to examine its regulation of aged care in 2017 and said the Liberals’ progress on implementing the recommendations of his report was ‘disappointing’.

Sadly this inaction is all true to form for the Liberals.

The Liberals have been asleep at the wheel for six years, with four Ministers and billions ripped out while Australia’s aged care system has lurched from one crisis to another.

Review after review has been ignored with recommendations for fixing Australia's aged care system left to collect dust in different ministerial offices

Scott Morrison and the Government must do better to ensure older Australians get the quality aged care services they deserve now – older Australians and their loved ones can’t afford to wait any longer.
