MORRISON GOVERNMENT IGNORED ADVICE TO FUND MORE HOME CARE PACKAGES

Damning new evidence has revealed the Morrison Government received advice from the Department of Health eight months ago on how to fund more home care packages but didn’t do enough.
The interim report of the Royal Commission into aged care last week described the unacceptable number of older Australians waiting for home care as ‘unsafe practice’ and ‘neglect’.
Answers received in Senate Estimates showed the Government received advice from the Department of Health as part of the Budget process.
The Prime Minister’s failure to fund one new home care package based on the Department’s advice came as the number of older Australians waiting for home care grew to 120,000.
The truth is Scott Morrison has known for a very long time how to fix the crisis in the care of older Australians but it is clear the Government hasn’t done enough.
It’s absolutely shocking that Scott Morrison has had the solutions to the home care crisis since February and yet he continues to make 120,000 older Australians wait for their approved package.
As the number of older Australians waiting for home care grew from 88,000 to 120,000 the Prime Minister hasn’t provided the home care older Australians need.
It is unsurprising given Scott Morrison was the man who ripped $1.2 billion from aged care in his first Budget.
After the damning release of the Royal Commission’s interim report Scott Morrison has refused to put a figure on how many new home care packages his Government will deliver and when the packages will be available.
This is exactly why Labor is calling for the Government to act now on aged care.
The Government has the answers on how to fix this crisis, it’s time it did something to support older Australians waiting for care.
