FURTHER STEP ‘TOWARDS ZERO’ AS SUICIDE PREVENTION GRANTS OPEN

The Morrison Government is taking a further step towards reducing the number of lives lost to suicide in Australia, by providing $8 million to support research aimed at identifying effective approaches to suicide prevention.

 

The funding is being provided through the Government’s Million Minds Mission, with the grant round officially opening on 28 November 2019.  

 

The Million Minds Mission is a decade-long, $125 million investment from the Australian Government to develop new approaches to prevention, detection and diagnosis treatment relating to mental illness. 

 

It aims to assist an additional one million people who might not otherwise benefit from mental health research and trials.

 

The Morrison Government recognises the devastating impact suicide has on people’s families and communities, and has made suicide prevention a high priority with the goal of working towards zero suicides. 

 

Tragically, there were more than 3000 lives lost to suicide in Australia last year. This grant opportunity aims to support the Government’s efforts through new and innovative research.

 

The Million Minds Mission is part of the Government’s Medical Research Future Fund. The first round of funding provided $27.5 million for research into the mental health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, children and youth, and eating disorders. 

 

The application process is managed by the National Health and Medical Research Council, and will be advertised on GrantConnect.

 

Supporting mental health and suicide prevention is a key priority for the Morrison Government, and is one of the four pillars of Australia’s Long Term National Health Plan.
