$5 MILLION INVESTMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH TO PREVENT CANCER
Greg Hunt MP
The Morrison Government is investing $5 million in a new funding round for research into the primary and secondary prevention of cancer, through the National Health and Medical Research Council’s partnership with the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD).

GACD is a unique collaboration of fifteen of the world’s leading publicly funded health research agencies that tackles the global burden of non-communicable diseases, by supporting research that systematically builds the evidence base for sound policymaking.

The burden of cancer is growing in populations worldwide and is a leading cause of premature death.

It is estimated up to 50 per cent of all cancers are preventable.

Around one-third of global cancer deaths are attributable to behavioural risk factors, such as tobacco and alcohol use, low fruit and vegetable intake, obesity and lack of physical activity.
Implementation of effective, evidence-based primary and secondary interventions is central to cancer control.

This round will fund implementation science to advance creative and diverse approaches to cancer prevention in many regions of the world.
