MORRISON GOVT CAUGHT OUT FIBBING TO BUSHFIRE SURVIVORS
Murray Watt MP
The Morrison Government has been exposed for exaggerating how much it has spent helping bushfire survivors, by nearly half a billion dollars.

Evidence given in Senate Estimates proves the Morrison Government has inflated the amount it has spent from its $2 billion bushfire recovery fund, by claiming credit for State and Territory spending.

Despite the Government’s repeated claims to have spent $1.2 billion from its bushfire recovery fund, the National Bushfire Recovery Agency confirmed that, eight months after the fires, the Federal Government had in fact only spent $717 million.

The remaining $471 million claimed has in fact been spent by State and Territory governments, and will not be paid by the Federal Government for up to 24 months. This hasn’t stopped the Morrison Government from grabbing a headline and piggybacking off the States and Territories’ cash splash.

The reality is the Morrison Government has spent nearly half a billion dollars less than they’ve claimed on bushfire recovery, while people in bushfire-affected regions still sleep in old caravans and sheds every night.

Once again the Morrison Government has proven it’s always there for the announcement, but isn’t so bothered about the delivery.

Scott Morrison has tried to pull the wool over the eyes of bushfire survivors first with his $2 billion dollar “notional” fund, and now with this.

The Prime Minister has repeatedly prioritised announcements over action.

He must come clean on what the Federal Government is actually doing to help communities in bushfire-affected regions.
