AGED CARE HOSPITALISATIONS ESCALATING
MARK BUTLER MP
New analysis from the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety categorically shows hospitalisation because of preventable causes has dramatically escalated in residential aged care.

Under the Coalition’s watch, 36.9 per cent of all aged care residents presented to emergency at least once a year.

The report released this month shows there has been a horrific rise in preventable causes of hospitalisation in the five years to 2018/19, including malnourishment (spiking by 19 per cent) and falls (increasing by 24 per cent).

Over the period of the report, hospital admissions overall have increased by almost 20 per cent and emergency department admissions have increased by 27 per cent.

The Morrison Government is responsible for the aged care system, they are responsible for the funding cuts and they are responsible for these escalating hospitalisation numbers.

The Prime Minister was directly responsible for $1.7 billion of funding cuts to aged care while he was Treasurer.

Every Australian wants to have confidence that their family members will be safe and well cared for in our residential aged care homes.

The Morrison Government has constantly neglected our senior Australians and the aged care system. On the eve of the Royal Commission handing down its final report later this month, why would families trust Scott Morrison to fix his broken aged care system?
