COURT WIN FOR QANTAS WORKERS
TONY BURKE MP
Australian aviation workers have good reason to celebrate today with the Federal Court ruling against the outsourcing of 2,000 Qantas workers.

Labor congratulates the TWU and every single one of these workers who have stood up for their rights at work.

Throughout this pandemic we have seen the dangers of insecure work. While there may be ongoing court challenges, today’s decision is a step in the right direction.

Sadly though, this decision does nothing for the tens of thousands of aviation workers who have lost their jobs over the last 18 months.

With the vaccine rollout faltering and Sydney stuck in lockdown, it is likely that more support will be needed for this essential sector.

The Government has had 18 months to come up with a plan for the survival and recovery of Australian aviation, but instead they have sat on their hands.

Scott Morrison could have used the billions of dollars in support he has offered to the major airlines to secure the jobs of workers, but he chose not to.

Today’s court win is good news for these 2,000 aviation workers and their families, but there is much left for the Morrison Government to do to secure the future of this essential industry.
