AGED CARE ACTION WELCOME
THE HON JULIE COLLINS MP
Labor welcomes reports the Turnbull Government is finally taken some limited action to ensure older Australians in residential aged care are receiving high quality care – but it’s come far too late and is far too little to properly address the crisis in the aged care system.

For more than a year, Labor has been calling for action to respond to the deeply concerning reports of abuse and neglect in aged care facilities.

Malcolm Turnbull must use the upcoming Budget to deliver genuine new investment in aged care to ensure older Australians are receiving high quality care.

The Turnbull Government has cut more than a billion dollars from residential aged care, impacting on the quality of care older Australians receive.

Under the Turnbull Government there are now close to 105,000 vulnerable older Australians, many with dementia, waiting for care to age at home.

The Turnbull Government is still sitting on more than a dozen reviews and reports addressing the task of reforming aged care funding, workforce and quality of care.

Labor recognises that everyday around the country the majority of older Australians are treated with care and respect at residential aged care facilities.

Labor is committed to working with the Government and the aged care sector to ensure older Australians can age safely and happily, whether it is in a facility or their own home.
