LONG TAN BURSARY RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED

Students from across Australia were congratulated today by Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester after being selected to receive funding under the Long Tan Bursary Scheme.
This year, 34 students who are children of Australia’s Vietnam War veterans will receive financial support to undertake post-secondary education.
“I am honoured to announce the successful recipients of the Long Tan Bursary. This Bursary provides support to the children of our Vietnam veterans as they undertake further study,” Mr Chester said.
“The sacrifices their family made during the Vietnam War should never be forgotten or underestimated.”
Each student will receive financial assistance of up to $12,000 over three years. The breakdown of 2018 bursaries in each state and territory is as follows:
- Australian Capital Territory - 1
- New South Wales – 4
- Queensland – 13
- Western Australia – 5
- South Australia – 3
- Victoria – 7
- Tasmania – 1
“Supporting the children of our Vietnam veterans to gain a tertiary education is just one of the ways the Australian Government continues to honour their service,” Mr Chester said.
“The Long Tan Bursary represents a fantastic opportunity for these children to undertake study that will provide them with a pathway to employment.”
The Long Tan Bursary scheme is administered by the Australian Veterans' Children Assistance Trust on behalf of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
Applications for the 2019 scheme will open on Vietnam Veterans’ Day, 18 August, and close on 31 October.
The 2018-19 Federal Budget extended the eligibility for the Long Tan Bursary to include grandchildren of Vietnam veterans and will come into effect on 1 August 2019.
