COALITION ENERGY DIVISIONS SKYROCKET

Further reports today show the internal divisions within the Liberal Party means they will either go to the election with no energy policy, or a policy that spends billions of taxpayers’ dollars on new, expensive, polluting coal-fired power stations – and indemnifying operators at a cost to taxpayers of $17 billion per station.

One Liberal backbencher is reported describing the Liberal plan to underwrite coal as, “subsidising Kodak to make camera film.”

The chaotic Coalition just in the last 24 hours:
  • Dropped their 11th energy policy since the election – the so-called ‘big stick’ legislation
  • Saw the Nationals call an emergency meeting because they were unaware the Treasurer had made a captain’s call to drop the legislation
  • Are facing divisions in their two largest branches over the plan to underwrite new coal
Meanwhile, Australian households and businesses are left paying the price with higher energy bills and rising pollution.

While the Liberals continue to fight their internal ideological battles, investment uncertainty in the energy sector means Australians are missing out on thousands of good new jobs.

Only Labor has a plan for more renewables and cheaper power. It’s time the Government came back to the table, listened to all the experts, and worked with Labor on a National Energy Guarantee.
