Child care reforms delivering for Australian parents

Australian families are better off under the Morrison Government’s Child Care Subsidy according to new data released today.
Child care data for the September 2018 quarter reveal that in the first quarter since the introduction of the Government’s Child Care Subsidy there was a:
- 25.4 per cent increase in the Government-provided support to $1.95 billion.
- 8.8 per cent increase in the average weekly hours of child care used by all families to
- 25.7 hours.
- 8.1 per cent increase in the total number of children using Centre Based Day Care,
- with 44 per cent of all children aged 0-5 using child care.
- Minister for Education Dan Tehan said the Government introduced the Child Care Subsidy on July 2 last year to provide better targeted financial support to the families that work the most and earn the least.
- “Since the introduction of the Child Care Subsidy, out-of-pocket child care expenses for families have fallen by ten per cent. That means more money in the pockets of Australian parents,” Mr Tehan said.
- “Our Government is providing record funding for child care in this year’s budget of $8.6 billion and we’re doing it without increasing taxes. In addition, the subsidy hourly rate caps will increase from July 2019.
- “We can afford to support Australian families with young children to go back to work, back to study or back to volunteering because our Government is keeping the economy strong.”
