REPORTS EXPOSE DEEP FLAWS IN PARENTSNEXT PROGRAM
BRENDAN O’CONNOR MP
Reports today of serious problems at the heart of the government’s parenting payments program, ParentsNext, is further evidence that the Morrison Liberal Government’s implementation of the program is deeply flawed.

Examples of the system exploiting vulnerable parents from both parents and current and former employment service employees reveal problems with the program that need to be addressed.

On the evidence it appears that ParentsNext has caused parents and their children great distress.

This isn’t good enough.

Today’s reports come after the Liberals made a gross attack on unemployed Australians this week in order to distract from their internal fighting over the rate of Newstart.

Labor believes in mutual obligation arrangements for jobseekers, but that means the Government has an obligation to ensure that the job active service is value for money.

The government’s response, tabled yesterday, to the Senate Community Affairs Reference Committee’s report on ParentsNext, which recommended a overhaul of the program, was inadequate.

The Liberals’ program has failed Australian parents and their children.

Rather than simply attacking people struggling to get work in order to distract from their own internal division, the Government should help people to get decent, secure work.
