WESTERN AUSTRALIA JOINS THE NDIS
HON JENNY MACKLIN MP
Federal Labor welcomes the announcement today by the McGowan Labor Government that Western Australia will join the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

This is a great day for people with disability, their families and carers in WA.

The NDIS is transforming the lives of people with disability right across the country and it will do the same in Western Australia.

For too long people with disability in WA have had to live with uncertainty about whether they would be part of the national NDIS or part of a separate WA scheme.

Today they have certainty, today WA joins the NDIS.

For the NDIS it to be a truly national scheme, it needs Western Australia.

The NDIS is the biggest social policy reform since the introduction of Medicare – it’s vital that it’s a nationally consistent scheme.

Earlier this year the Turnbull Government agreed to a last minute deal with the Barnett Liberal Government on a WA NDIS, on the eve of the Western Australian Government going into caretaker mode.

Federal Labor was critical of that decision at the time and we warmly welcome this new agreement.

The NDIS would not exist without tens of thousands of Australians who campaigned for it, including many in Western Australia.

Federal Labor acknowledges the hard work of disability advocates in WA who campaigned for Western Australia to join the NDIS.

We thank the Premier of Western Australia, Mark McGowan and the Minister for Disability Services, Stephen Dawson for their resolve in ensuring that WA joins a nationally delivered NDIS.
