FEDERAL LABOR TO DELIVER ARMADALE LINE EXTENSION
BILL SHORTEN MP
A Shorten Labor Government will invest $240.5 million to extend the Armadale rail line and build a much needed train station at Byford, creating over 3000 new jobs for Western Australians and delivering world class public transport infrastructure for a growing region.

Perth’s southern suburbs have been identified as one of Australia’s fastest growing regions, with the population of Byford itself forecast to double over just the next ten years. This highlights the importance of delivering the right infrastructure that connects the suburbs to the city, and provides better access to jobs.

The Armadale Line extension will consist of 8km of new rail and together with the new Byford station, will provide improved access to public transport, and better connect the regions to the Perth CBD and the major employment hubs along the way. It will also help to alleviate traffic congestion on local and arterial roads towards Perth.
That’s why Labor is making this $240.5 million investment – because we understand the importance of ensuring infrastructure is keeping pace with this fast growing region.

Western Australians want jobs and infrastructure for their state – that’s what a Shorten Labor Government will deliver.
The project will be undertaken in partnership with the McGowan Labor Government. Planning is underway to identify the best location for the new station that will also provide opportunities for development and revitalisation in the area.
This builds on Federal Labor’s $700 million commitment to build the Morley-Ellenbrook line and $83 million commitment to relocate the Midland Station and extend the line to Bellevue. These METRONET projects will create thousands of jobs and help ease congestion across Perth.
Today’s commitment is funded from Labor’s Fair Share for WA fund, announced to bring WA's GST share up to the equivalent of a 70 cent floor.
Western Australia does not get its fair share from Turnbull – with the Liberals failing to do anything to address concerns about GST relativities.

Instead of giving multinationals and millionaires big tax handouts, Labor is prioritising more infrastructure and more jobs for WA, and investing in projects that will make a real difference to the lives of West Australians now and in the future.
