TURNBULL CAN’T BE TRUSTED TO CRACK DOWN ON BANKS
JIM CHALMERS MP
Nobody trusts the Liberals to be tough on the banks because they’ve been covering up the serious scandals in the financial sector for years.
Labor believes Commissioner Hayne should have the time and resources to finish his job properly, the penalties for those who have done the wrong thing should be as strong as possible, and compensation for victims of proven wrongdoing should also be considered.
Australians don’t forget that Malcolm Turnbull didn’t want this Royal Commission; he tried to stop it from happening.
Turnbull described it as “regrettable”, Scott Morrison called it a “populist whinge” and Kelly O’Dwyer dismissed it as a “talkfest”.
Malcolm Turnbull and his Liberals need to explain why they wanted the rorts and rip-offs to be kept secret for so long.
Every new shocking revelation that comes out of the Royal Commission is an indictment on the Turnbull Government and its shameful attempts to protect the banks from scrutiny.
Of course we support tougher penalties for wrongdoing in the financial sector – we just don’t trust the Liberals to do it properly.
Labor made the laws a lot tougher in Government, and the Liberals tried to water them down.
The only reason we are learning about these shocking rorts and rip-offs is because Labor pushed for this Royal Commission – the Liberals wanted all of this to stay secret.
