SCRAPPING NATIONAL DISABILITY AWARDS

The Government’s decision to abandon the National Disability Awards is a real snub to people with disability and the disability sector.
Reports today on AM Agenda reveal that the Government not only abandoned annual awards honouring the tireless work of disability advocates, but it failed to notify the sector.
“This is downright disrespectful” said Senator Carol Brown, Shadow Minister for Disability and Carers.
“This shows that the Government doesn’t feel the need to consult with people with disabilities or advocates in the community”.
Assistant Minister, Sarah Henderson says that she has heard “some disappointment” from the sector, but has failed to respond to these concerns to date.
“The International Day for People with Disability is just around the corner”.
“The Government needs to tell Australians what it has planned to celebrate people with disabilities on December 3rd, and it needs to explain why it abandoned these awards without consultation”.
In answers to Questions on Notice given on April 20 of this year, the Government said that it was finalising its plans for the 2018 program for the National Disability Awards.
How much longer will people with disabilities need to wait to hear from this Government?
The Government needs to answer why these awards were cancelled.
It needs to answer who was consulted about this decision and it needs to answer when the Minister signed off on this decision.
People with disabilities have not been consulted on these decisions. Six months on, it’s time for answers.
