Maintaining Australia’s cutting-edge in research
THE HON DAN TEHAN MP
The Morrison Government will ensure Australia remains a world leader in research that changes lives and grows our economy.
Australia’s best brains will investigate what is required to deliver future research in cutting edge fields as part of the Morrison Government’s $2.2 billion Research Infrastructure Investment Plan. Expert panels are working to determine what equipment, facilities and services will be required for Australia to be a world leader in the following fields:
  •   Synthetic biology: one of the fastest growing areas of modern science, it draws on biology, engineering and computer science and can help with human health, agriculture and manufacturing.
  •   Australia’s climate and earth systems: enhancing our capability to model and simulate changes in Australia’s weather and climate systems with increasing precision, to support industry and the public.
  •   National environmental prediction system: enhancing the resources for researchers to model and forecast changes to Australia’s ecosystem.
  • Minister for Education Dan Tehan said the studies would ensure that Australia’s record investment in research was best supported to deliver value for money.
  • “The Morrison Government is investing in our country’s future,” Mr Tehan said. “Australian researchers have been at the forefront of innovation, from WiFi to black box flight recorders, and we need to ensure we continue to invest in research that improves lives and grows our economy.
  • “Because our Government has overseen continued strong economic growth where more than 1.1 million jobs have been created, we can pay for the infrastructure to support our world-class research.”
  • A further five studies will commence in 2020 and 2021 to address Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS); Precision measurement; Biosecurity; Biobanks; and, Optimising the value of high performance computing through enhanced model performance.
