VISIT TO INDIA
Jason Clare MP
Today I will be travelling to India for a series of meeting with Indian political and business leaders.

India is Australia’s fifth largest trading partner and a key market for Australian resource, agriculture and service exports.

India is the fastest growing major economy in the world and is on track to become the third largest economy in the world, after China and the United States.

This trip follows Labor’s announcement last year that if we win the next election we will implement  the Indian Economic Strategy prepared by Peter Varghese. This is a long term strategy for Australia to build our economic ties with India between now and 2035.

In addition to the recommendations in the Varghese Report Labor has also committed as part of its FutureAsia plan to:
  • Hold Annual Australia Week in India trade missions, focussing on the 10 sectors and 10 states identified in Varghese’s Indian Economic Strategy. At the moment, trade missions to India are held only every two years.
  • Work with the Indian Government to establish an internship program to enable young Australian professionals to gain commercial experience working in India for up to 6 months.
