Back to school in 2019

Nearly four million children will go to school in 2019, as the school gates open for another year of learning from today. 

Today is the first day of school for state school students in Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and parts of New South Wales and the Northern Territory. 

More than 320,000 students are expected to start the first day of their education this year and an estimated 300,000 will start high school. 

Minister for Education Dan Tehan said the first day of school was an important day. 

“The first day of school for the year is an exciting time to catch up with your friends and get ready for a new year of learning new things, for some it can also be a little scary and that’s OK too,” Mr Tehan said. 

“My message to all students is that getting a good education is important to unlocking your potential and helping you realise your dreams, so it’s essential that you take school seriously, listen to your teacher and study hard. But it’s also important to have fun. 

“Parents and carers also have an important role in their child’s education and I encourage them to take an active interest. The Morrison Government has developed resources to support parents and children with information to get the most out of their education, including healthy eating, managing homework, screen time and anti-bullying advice.”
