LIBERALS FAIL TO EQUIP YOUNG PEOPLE WITH SECURE WORK
THE HON BRENDAN O’CONNOR
Under the Abbott-Turnbull-Morrison Government, many young people are facing a double blow of precarious work combined with inadequate skill training for the jobs of the future, according to a report released today by the Foundation for Young Australians (FYA).

The report states that almost 1 in 3 young Australians are unemployed or underemployed, diminishing their prospects and costing the nation more than $4.5 billion each year.

High rates of underutilisation among young people means that young Australians are not living up to their potential, employers are missing out on great talent and the nation is less productive.

Over the last five years, this government has presided over record high underemployment, rising insecure work and record low wages growth and has no plan to address these issues.

Only a Shorten Labor Government will respond to these challenges.

Labor will make labour market programs work for unemployed people and employers. Labor will conduct a landmark review into post-secondary education, including Unis and TAFE, will improve employment security, restore funding cuts from schools, and boost apprenticeships.

Labor welcomes the important contribution made by FYA, who have demonstrated consistent leadership in highlighting challenges faced by young people.

The Morrison Government’s cuts and chaos are failing young Australians.

When it comes to secure jobs with decent wages, Australians know that the only party they can trust is Labor.
