Government driving down cost of child care

Our Government’s Child Care Subsidy is driving down out-of-pocket costs for parents. 

Since our Government’s Child Care Subsidy was introduced on 2 July 2018, out-of-pocket child care costs for families have reduced by 10.4 per cent, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ consumer price index (CPI) released today. 

In the September 2018 quarter, out-of-pocket child care costs for families fell 11.8 per cent. In the December 2018 quarter, there was a slight increase of 1.4 per cent. 

Minister for Education Dan Tehan said the Morrison Government was providing record funding and greater support to families as part of its new Child Care Package, including the Child Care Subsidy. 

“After the introduction of our Government’s new Child Care Subsidy on 2 July 2018, we have seen the largest quarterly fall in child care prices in a decade and a 10.4 per cent decrease over the last six months,” Mr Tehan said. 

“Our Government’s Child Care Subsidy is designed to assist parents with the cost of child care while they’re working, training, studying or volunteering – and it continues to do exactly that. 

“The Morrison Government’s child care reforms are leaving more dollars in the pockets of Australian families, which we can afford to do because we’re keeping our economy strong.” 

Since 2 July 2018, more than one million families have successfully transitioned to the new child care arrangements.
