LABOR COMMITS TO $5 MILLION MANFACTURING HUB

The University of Tasmania’s new West Park campus in Burnie will get a world class equipment manufacturing hub thanks to a $5 million investment from Federal Labor.
The Deputy Labor Leader, Tanya Plibersek, said the new hub would be used to train around 60 students a year to prepare them for jobs in equipment design and manufacture.
“We want to give Tasmanians the opportunity to manufacture the high-end equipment industry needs for the future – including in agriculture and construction,” Ms Plibersek said.
“Students will be able to study new degrees in equipment design, technology, and advanced manufacturing right here in the North-West.
“The hub will simulate a real manufacturing workshop.
“It will have seven metre ceilings and crane access.
“The only way Tasmanians in the North-West will get the education they need for the jobs of the future is to vote for Justine Keay and Labor,” Ms Plibersek said.
The Member for Braddon, Justine Keay, said Labor’s announcement was terrific news for both local students and businesses.
“High school, TAFE, and university students will all be able to use the new facility, so more of our young people will have the chance to get a hands-on education in equipment manufacturing,” Ms Keay said.
“The hub will work closely with local businesses to generate apprenticeships and jobs in equipment manufacturing.
“It will also partner with industry in North-West Tasmania to ensure we remain globally competitive.
“Building the new manufacturing hub will support more than 40 jobs through the construction phase and beyond.
“Labor can afford to invest in outstanding projects like this because unlike the Liberals we are not giving handouts to the top end of town,” Ms Keay said.
This commitment to the University of Tasmania West Park campus is part of Labor’s $300 million University Future Fund.
