LAUNCESTON MARITIME DEFENCE, INNOVATION AND DESIGN PRECINCT WITH $20 MILLION INVESTMENT

A Shorten Labor Government will commit $20 million to establish the Launceston Maritime Defence, Innovation and Design Precinct.

As an island continent, Australia must continue to develop our world-class maritime training facilities, and the skills and the capabilities they provide Australians.

This funding will go towards a new building on the Australian Maritime College (AMC) campus at Newnham as stage one of the new Maritime Defence, Innovation and Design Precinct.

The new Precinct will turbocharge jobs in local small and medium businesses through new opportunities to participate in Australia’s defence industry.

The Precinct will bring together in one place industry research and development resources with the specialised education and training of the University of Tasmania.

The Precinct would bring small to medium enterprises into AMC to leverage the Precinct’s offer of co-working spaces, collaborative research, shared infrastructure and access to workforce training.

The new facilities will house a fit-for-purpose series of labs and workshops that will provide the entire range of technical services required to develop hydrodynamic test rigs and models in secure environments.

These test rigs and models can then be trialled in the AMC’s world class existing research facilities, including the Cavitation Research Laboratory, Towing Tank, Model Test Basin, Underwater Collision Research Facility and the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle facility.

This is part of Labor’s Charter with our science and research community to give them the very best facilities and equipment the nation can afford, so they can provide us with the very best research and answers to the problems we face.

This is complemented by Labor’s plan to protect Australia’s economic sovereignty and national security by creating a strategic merchant fleet.

When it comes to northern Tasmanian jobs and the skills of the future the choice between Labor and Liberals could not be clearer.

Labor has made tough budget decisions to ensure our priorities are fully paid for: we will make multinationals pay their fair share and close unsustainable tax loopholes.
