LABOR TO BAN LGBTIQ CONVERSION THERAPY, WILL THE LIBERALS?
MARK DREYFUS QC MP
A Shorten Labor Government will end the practice of LGBTIQ conversion therapy (CT).

We will work with survivors and advocates on a range of strategies to end this insidious practice, including a nationwide ban.

Practitioners of CT insist that LGBTIQ people can be “cured”. There is no valid scientific evidence to support this and the practice has been widely condemned by health professionals and by the Australian Medical Association.

The techniques used by various CT practitioners include inflicting physical pain and emotional distress to coerce people into “changing”.

Labor calls on Scott Morrison to also ban this harmful practice.

We know Mr Morrison refused to support marriage equality when the parliament voted on it,  despite his electorate voting yes.

What excuse does he have for allowing conversion therapy to continue in a modern, fair and tolerant society?

Labor believes that no one should be subjected to painful, unnecessary and harmful pseudoscientific practices.

Medical experts and survivor organisations have condemned the practice as harmful and a serious threat to the health and human rights of those who are subjected to it.

The United Nations Committee Against Torture and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights have raised their concerns about CT on numerous occasions.

The Victorian Labor Government has already committed to banning the discredited and dangerous practice.

There is no place in modern Australia for this practice.
