VISIT TO PAPUA NEW GUINEA
SENATOR THE HON ANNE RUSTON
I will travel to Papua New Guinea from 24 to 27 April to commemorate ANZAC Day and to mark the shared military history between our two countries.

Australia’s partnership with Papua New Guinea is one of lasting significance. It is rooted in our deep historical bonds and close cultural understanding.

Approximately 7,000 Australians paid the ultimate sacrifice in the New Guinea Campaign throughout World War II, protecting not only their homeland but also Australia’s closest neighbour.

Thousands more Papua New Guineans served alongside Australian forces, demonstrating tremendous courage and bravery.

In Port Moresby, I will attend the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Bomana War Cemetery, followed by a memorial service in Isurava on the site of some of the most intense fighting in the Kokoda Track campaign.

It will be an honour to join the Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Rick Burr, for these services.

The delegation will also visit Australian-supported projects including health and education initiatives and will engage with local community leaders and entrepreneurs.
