RESERVE FORCES DAY

Today is Reserve Forces Day which recognises the important role the Navy, Army and Air Force Reservists have played in theatres of war, conflicts and peacekeeping – and is to thank their families and employers for their support.

Shadow Minister for Veterans Affairs’ and Defence Personnel, Shayne Neumann, said Reserve Forces Day is an important day that helps to raise awareness of the ordinary Australians doing extraordinary things to serve their country.

“Our Navy, Army and Air Force Reservists are not just ‘weekend warriors’,” he said.

“For more than 100 years, they have played a key role in the defence of the nation and continue to be a key part of our integrated Defence Force.

“Australian Defence Force Reserve units have served in some of our most important military campaigns, such as the Kokoda Track during World War Two.

“Our part-time forces have deployed to a number of overseas warfighting and peacekeeping operations in recent years, including Afghanistan, Iraq and the Solomon Islands, as well as border protection operations.

“Some of our greatest military leaders have been Reservists, such as the great General Sir John Monash.

The Australian Defence Force Reserve also provides an excellent pathway to and from the full-time Defence Force.

“It gives part-time defence personnel fantastic experience and allows the ADF to tap into valuable civilian skills,” Mr Neumann said.

“It’s also important to acknowledge all of the partners, families, and employers who support our Reservists in doing what they do.

“Today is an opportunity to thank all who have served, and who continue to give up their time to be part of the Australian Defence Force Reserves. We salute their service to the nation,” he said.
