SA LIBERALS FAIL AGAIN ON WOMEN IN SPORT
SENATOR DON FARRELL
Labor is concerned by reports this week that the South Australian Liberal State Government will not join Football Federation Australia’s bid to host the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

This is the third time this year that Steven Marshall’s Liberals have let South Australians down when it comes to women’s sport.

In January, the announcement of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup fixture revealed that while Karen Rolton Oval will host some great warm-up games, the SA Liberal State government has failed to secure any group stage games or finals for South Australia.

In March, the SA Liberal State government vastly underestimated the State’s support for the Adelaide Crows in the AFLW Grand Final, failing to put on enough buses and trains to cater for the 53,034 people who packed Adelaide Oval to set an all-time record for a crowd at a stand-alone women’s sport event in Australia.

FIFA’s requirements for international games and clashes with the AFL season are hurdles, but it seems Steven Marshall and his team are not even interested in trying to overcome them.

Only days ago the South Australian Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing Corey Wingard launched a new panel called ‘Game On’ that he said would ensure South Australian sport was “being given the management, planning, and facilities it needed to thrive on the national stage”.

Apparently hosting the Matildas on the international stage as they chase the world game’s ultimate prize is in Steven Marshall’s too-hard basket.
