‘TELL US WHY YOU CARE’ THIS CARERS’ WEEK

National Carers’ Week 2019, from October 13 to 19, has the theme “tell us why you care”.

Shadow Assistant Minister for Carers, Emma McBride, said she commended Carers’ Australia and all the individuals and groups who support Australia’s carer community.

During the launch of Carers’ Week at Australian Parliament House, Ms McBride shared her own experience as a carer.

“For almost seven years I was one of the one in eight Australians caring for a loved one, my Dad Grant, who was diagnosed with Younger Onset Dementia at 63,” she said.

“I had been a pharmacist for almost 20 years, a mental health worker for 15 and worked at my local hospital for a decade but my background or my training didn’t prepare me for being a carer.

“Helping my Mum care for my Dad was the toughest time in my life, but it also made me the person I am today.

“You don’t sign up to be a carer, you do it because you love them,” she said.

“Carers Week is a chance to raise awareness of the work done by Australia’s 2.7 million carers and I’d encourage every carer to share their story at carersweek.com.au.”
