LABOR RECOGNISES AUSTRALIAN MIGRATION AND SETTLEMENT AWARD WINNERS AND FINALISTS

Labor recognises the winners and finalists of the sixth Australian Migration and Settlement Awards 2019, held at the Great Hall in Parliament House last night.
It’s so important to celebrate the contribution made by individuals and organisations that welcome new migrants and build a sense of belonging in the Australian community.
This year’s group of winners and finalists is an outstanding advertisement for the benefits of migration and the richness that diversity brings to all Australians.
Labor particularly acknowledges Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Peter Scanlon AO. Peter is the founder and chair of the Scanlon Foundation focusing on fostering social cohesion and funding a range of research to encourage multicultural Australia as a welcoming, prosperous and cohesive nation.
Mr Scanlon’s stirring speech and his challenge to political leaders to tell the full story of Australia and help Australians recognise the contribution of migrants was an important reminder of the value of inclusion and the need to tell the full Australian story.
His work extends to the North Melbourne Learning and Life Centre (The Huddle), the Hume Project, the Dandenong Project, the Scanlon Institute for Applied Social Cohesion Research.
Labor also acknowledges the work of the Migration Council Australia for making the awards possible.
Labor understands that modern Australia and multicultural Australia are the same thing.
