MORRISON’S LATEST CUTS TO THE ARTS
TONY BURKE MP
Scott Morrison’s cuts are once again punishing Australia’s arts sector.

Reports today that dozens of smaller arts organisations are set to lose federal funding are deeply concerning – but not at all surprising given the Liberals’ record.

This is happening because the Government cut the Australia Council and now refuses to properly index grants funding.

This is a terrible outcome for the sector - but it’s no accident. Cutting funding to the arts has been a deliberate Liberal policy ever since they were elected in 2013.

If people wonder why so many of our artists have to work overseas – it’s because of this direct Government decision.

If people wonder why so many of our actors have to adopt an American accent to stay in work - it’s because of this direct Government decision.

If people wonder why it’s so hard to find Australian stories online - it’s because of this direct Government decision.

Every cut to the Australia Council is a direct cut to the telling of Australian stories.

The government of Australia should back Australian culture. Sadly, this lot doesn’t.
