AGED CARE ROYAL COMMISSION MUST INVESTIGATE
Julie Collins MP
Labor is calling on the Aged Care Royal Commission to investigate what has gone wrong at Newmarch House after reports of a ‘second wave’ of coronavirus infections at the facility.

The residents of Newmarch House and their loved ones, and the staff at the facility, deserve answers about what has gone wrong.

14 residents have sadly passed away at the facility and 63 people have now tested positive.

The Royal Commission has the necessary investigative powers to get to the bottom of what has happened, with concerning reports of infection control failures at Newmarch House.

While the Royal Commission is rightly looking at aged care and COVID-19 more generally, a deeper investigation into what happened at this facility is warranted.

All Australians must be assured we have the very best infection control practises in aged care.

It is clear the Morrison Government has been too slow to act, and sadly we are seeing the tragic consequences.

The Minister for Aged Care must assure Australians that this will not happen at other nursing homes across the country.

Australia’s aged care system was broken before coronavirus and this is only putting extra stress on the system.

We have seen the devastating impact of coronavirus outbreaks in aged care in Australia and across the globe.

This is why an investigation from the Royal Commission is so important.

It is vitally important workers and providers are supported to ensure that we limit the transmission of COVID-19 in aged care.
