LABOR CELEBRATES CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND DIALOGUE
ANDREW GILES MP
Today is the UN World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.

In December 2002, the UN General Assembly declared May 21 a day to deepen our understanding of the values of cultural diversity; recognising cultural diversity is a driving force of development, not only with respect to economic growth, but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling society.

It’s an especially important day for Australians, given our proud multiculturalism. A time to celebrate our diverse backgrounds, and to share culture and stories, to listen to those around us.

And it’s especially important now. At this time of pandemic, building resilience matters and culture can be a critical part of this. While people may be physically isolated, we can all take strength from culture, from who we are.

As we focus on coming together to get through the COVID-19 crisis, Australians can also take pride in the unique mix of cultures we are fortunate to share in.
