KEITH PITT WANTS NUCLEAR REACTORS, BUT NOT IN HIS BACKYARD

Today on Sunday Agenda the Resources Minister and chief nuclear advocate Keith Pitt was asked whether he would have a nuclear reactor in his own electorate.
He said, “These are engineering questions. I often get asked about whether I would have one in my own back yard. I mean the challenge we have here is I have an area that is prone to earthquakes so I just think from a technical viewpoint that is unlikely.’’
Dangerous and expensive nuclear power plants are fine for communities around Australia but not in Keith Pitt’s own backyard.
The Minister said small nuclear reactors will be a part of Australia’s energy future and that is why they have been included in the “technology road map”. The question is now which communities will be in the nuclear firing line if not Keith Pitt’s own?
Over the past 50 years, there have been at least 95 proposals for nuclear power stations in Australia and 42 proposals for nuclear waste dumps.
Almost all of the proposed nuclear reactor sites are near residential communities.
Nuclear energy is three times more expensive than firmed renewables and would lead to higher power prices.
The Prime Morrison needs to be upfront with Australians about exactly where he wants to build nuclear reactors.
