UP TO 143 APPLICANTS PER JOB
LINDA BURNEY MP
There could be up to 143 job applicants for every job vacancy when the Government’s mutual obligation requirements increase.

The Senate Community Affairs Committee held hearings today to consider the Government’s JobSeeker increases.

As part of the increase, Australians on JobSeeker will be required to apply for 20 jobs per month from 1 July, as part of their mutual obligations.

Officials from the Department of Social Services fronted the committee.

Labor Senator Malarndirri McCarthy asked officials from the Department of Social Services at the hearing whether they were aware of how many job applications are expected for each vacancy, when the 20 applications per month rule returns.

DSS officials were unable to provide advice and take the question on notice.

There were 192,000 job advertisements in February (based on the Internet Vacancy Index released today) and 1.38 million people on unemployment payments (based on DSS data).

This means that there could be up to 27.6 million applications each month, or 143 applications per job vacancy, if this was applied this month.

Labor is calling on the Government to explain how it is reasonable to require Australians looking for work to make 20 job applications each month.
