LABOR’S VISION FOR CITIES
CATHERINE KING MP
Today Federal Labor outlined its vision for the future of Australia’s cities, and for the millions of Australians who live and work in them.

The pandemic has changed how cities function – people’s ability to come together, to work, interact, socialise, travel and move around the urban environment.

In response,  Labor will implement six measures as we recreate cities policy in the wake of the pandemic and the recession:
  • Transform City Deals into genuine City Partnerships - promoting genuine collaboration between the three levels of government, business and the community.
  • Revitalise our CBDs.
  • Renew the independent role of Infrastructure Australia - through the creation of an Australian Cities and Suburbs unit.
  • Produce an annual state of the cities report to inform policy-making with evidence.
  • Deliver a new National Urban Policy framework.
  • Give local government a voice in a meaningful National Cabinet process.
The Morrison Government has vacated the field on cities policy. It is failing to provide leadership and direction, and this is leaving cities and suburbs behind.

An Albanese Labor Government will deliver a cities policy that will underpin economic growth and productivity growth, and will secure more liveable and sustainable communities.
