MORRISON BUDGET FAILS FUTURE OF AGRICULTURE
Julie Collins MP
The Morrison Government has again missed an opportunity to properly fix issues in Australia’s agriculture workforce and set the industry up for growth.

Despite the Morrison Government’s Budget racking up billions of dollars in new debt, there is no substantial response in this Budget to the National Agricultural Workforce Strategy that was handed to the Morrison Government more than six months ago.

A grab bag of half measures and pilot programs will not solve the serious issues in Australia’s agriculture workforce now.

The Budget predicts COVID-19 restrictions that have caused huge labour shortages and crop losses on farms will last for at least another year, but there is no plan to deal with this issue.

The Morrison Government should stop passing the buck and start working to fix the serious workforce shortage or Australian produce will continue to rot on farms.

Minister Littleproud and the Nationals are more interested in shameless politicking than showing leadership for Australian farmers.

The Budget’s biosecurity announcement only covers the cuts the Morrison Government was planning after its biosecurity levy failed.

Before the Budget, biosecurity funding was actually going backwards under the Morrison Government.

This Budget is a missed opportunity and Australian farmers deserve better.
