VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT LEADS THE WAY IN AUSTRALIAN MADE TRAINS
CATHERINE KING MP
Today’s announcement from the Victorian Labor Government that they will invest $986 million to build 25 brand-new X’Trapolis 2.0 trains right here in Australia is a welcome example of a government harnessing its infrastructure investment to support Australian jobs and maintain local industries.
Labor governments know that building trains here creates more jobs, trains young workers, grows local industries and, frankly, delivers a better end product.
Today’s announcement builds on Victoria’s proud history of building trains locally, and continues the great work of states like Queensland and Western Australia in building trains here at home, rather than purchasing them from overseas.
This is exactly the approach an Albanese Labor Government would bring right across the nation.
When last in Government, Labor committed more funding to urban public transport than all previous federal governments combined since Federation.
An Albanese Labor Government would build on that proud record.
As part of an Albanese Labor Government’s investments in Australian rail, we would establish a National Rail Manufacturing Plan, building a rolling stock export industry and boosting Australia’s GDP by up to $5 billion.
Labor’s National Rail Manufacturing Plan will ensure the full benefit of this public spending goes towards creating Australian jobs – from laying the rails to manufacturing the trains.
This will build jobs in Ballarat, Bendigo, Maryborough Newcastle, Perth and Dandenong.
Labor governments build trains, Coalition Governments import them from overseas.
The Morrison Government should take note of today’s announcement and commit to harnessing their infrastructure spend to build Australian jobs, train Australian apprentices and grow Australian industries.
