SETTLEMENT BETWEEN AUSTRALIA POST AND MS HOLGATE
MICHELLE ROWLAND MP
Labor notes the $1.1 million settlement today between Australia Post and Ms Holgate.
From the moment the watch purchases became public, the Prime Minister and the Minister for Communications were driven by panic and politics.
It was the job of the Board to withstand their pressure, and to act diligently to uphold due process and natural justice. Today’s settlement is an admission that did not occur.
No public official in the future should be subject to the unsubstantiated taunts of a sitting Prime Minister on the floor of Parliament, as Ms Holgate was on 22 October 2020.
The Prime Minister diminished himself with that juvenile and premeditated display, and his double standards about taxpayers money are there for everyone to see.
Had due process been followed by the Australia Post Board, this situation would not have arisen.
Australia Post must now look forward.
The focus of the company must return squarely to what matters: community services, consumers, its workforce and enabling the broader digital economy.
